Taremwa, representing Last Drop Africa, was honoured during a gala event hosted by the Pan African Climate Justice Alliance (PACJA) in Abidjan, coinciding with the 12th Conference on Climate Change and Development in Africa (CCDA-XII).

Taremwa was not the only Ugandan to be celebrated at the event. Ojok James Onon, alongside his Nigerian colleague Uchenna Igwe, won the award for Investigative Reporting for their work with Zam Magazine Africa. Additionally, Wambi Michael, another Ugandan journalist, secured the top spot in the Coverage of Local Climate Change Issues category for his contributions to Inter Press Service.

These accolades highlight Uganda’s strong presence in climate change journalism and the pivotal role its journalists play in advocating for environmental justice across the continent.

The ACCER Awards celebrate journalists across Africa who excel in simplifying and raising awareness of complex environmental and climate change issues.

This year, 478 journalists submitted entries across six categories, with Taremwa emerging as the winner in the Digital Activism category. The awards highlight the critical role of media in advancing climate justice and promoting environmental advocacy on the continent.

This recognition underscores Last Drop Africa's dedication to leveraging digital platforms to address pressing climate issues and inspire action across Africa.

Now in its 8th edition, the ACCER Awards were first launched in 2013. Dr. Mithika Mwenda, Executive Director of PACJA, emphasized the strategic role of the media in advancing and promoting climate justice advocacy across Africa and beyond.

The African Climate Change and Environmental Reporting (ACCER) Awards, held biennially since 2013, aim to recognize and encourage exceptional journalists and media networks. These awards celebrate those who effectively use their skills, reach, and influence to simplify complex environmental and scientific discussions, raising awareness of how these issues impact people’s lives, societies, economies, and the planet’s health.
