The announcement was made during a dynamic town hall event in Kampala, Uganda, where students from Makerere University and alumni of the summer school gathered to reflect on the journey so far and ignite fresh energy under the 2025 theme: "Navigating Complex Geo-Politics: Igniting the Power of African Youth to Push Political Leadership in Africa to the Finishing Line."

Now in its fifth year, NSSCJ has trained over 2,000 young advocates from across the continent and beyond since its inception in 2021. This year’s session will run from August 18 to August 30, 2025, hosted by the University of Addis Ababa, in tandem with the highly anticipated Africa Climate Summit.

“We are thrilled to launch the application process for NSSCJ’s fifth edition,” said Dr. Mithika Mwenda, Executive Director of PACJA. “Although we carry Nairobi in the name, our mission transcends borders. This year’s relocation to Addis Ababa symbolizes our Pan-African spirit and strategic alignment with continental climate action.”

More than just a summer school, NSSCJ has emerged as a flagship platform for shaping climate-conscious leadership. It champions intra- and inter-generational equity, fosters inclusive climate solutions, and emboldens young people to challenge the status quo in local, national, and global policy spaces.

UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) representative Yosef Amha reminded youth of their critical role in safeguarding Africa's future:

“You are the drivers of our destiny. It is not just about finding solutions but interrogating them to ensure they serve our people, our economy, and our ecosystems.”

Meanwhile, Dr. Samuel Ogallah of the African Union emphasized the AU’s deep commitment to youth engagement in climate negotiations:

“We’re working with young African negotiators across the continent. Some are here today, and it’s this kind of investment that gives us hope for a continent that is not only resilient but visionary in climate leadership.”

Be part of the change

Applications are now open for passionate, driven individuals ready to immerse themselves in climate justice learning and activism. Whether you’re a student, community leader, researcher, or budding negotiator, NSSCJ-V offers a rare opportunity to join Africa’s vanguard of climate champions.
